Extras on the coinsThere are over 200 countries in the World. Probably not all the countries do mint commemorative silver coins but most of them do. If we assume that there are 5 silver coins emitted in one country every year that means at least few hundreds of coins in the World every year! That’s a big competition for minting companies. How to encourage potential buyers either collectors or investors? For investors a great incentive can be very low mintage, anyway it means less coins for sale and lower income for the issuer. Another way to make people buy the coin is to keep the mintage at reasonable level, but to work on the visual look of the coin. Just silver coins without any special extras are becoming not so interesting. Coin designers are working hard to find new ideas of the look of the coin. 1. stones There is a huge variety on stones which are used while producing commemorative coins: diamonds, opals, ambers are just few of them. Last days Swarovski stones are quite popular. The most famous series with extras are: Tiffany Art (with stained glass) – Palau 2. colored coins There is a huge variety of colorful coins. The most common series are famous painters. The great success made the coin with Ivan Aivazovsky – famous ships painter from Armenia., which price tripled in very short time. Another very interesting coin is Van Gogh form Niue Island, minted by Warsaw Mint. This coin has won a first place in conference “coins 2008” in category: “original technique” in St. Petersburg. 3. shapes, type of metal Apart form silver and gold, which are the most popular metals among commemorative coins, sometimes coins are e.g. covered with Palladium. It gives the coin very special black color. This technique was use for example in series: “black beauties”. It consists of 7 coins mint in 2008 in 7 different countries. Some coins do not have w common rounded shape, but rectangle one. Most of the coins with famous painters are made in this shape. |
